For a decade, Ntologi ruled as the leader of an 80 strong group of chimpanzees in the woods of Mahale, Tanzania. For seven years, he fought off younger challengers and made two astonishing comebacks, using a masterful combination of violence and diplomacy, chimpanzee-style. The cameras returned each year, documenting the saga of Ntologi as an intense intrigue, a tale of plot and counterplot worthy of Machiavelli. Scenes of leading males battling for dominance seem all too human, providing fascinating insights into male aggression in our own society.
